Baptisms

What you need to know: being baptised at St Johns & St Philips

Baptisms at St John's and St Philip's take place on the second Sunday of each month outside the normal services throughout the year except during advent.

Before the day of baptism, you will be visited in your home by our vicar, who will talk to you about the meaning of baptism and will run through the important parts of the service with you so that you know what to do on the day.

The service will embrace the use of an onscreen format. During the service parents, godparents and supporting friends will be invited to accompany the child being baptised to the font, where the congregation will also take part in welcoming the child being baptised into the church community.

Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God, where the parents and godparents will actively encourage the child to grow in the knowledge of God, so the child when older can make an informed choice to follow Jesus. The service will be the first step in response to God’s love. It is a joyful moment when we rejoice in what God has done for us in Christ, making serious promises and declaring our faith. The wider community of the local church and friends welcome the child, promising support and prayer for the future relationship with God through His son Jesus.
